The LEGO Game That Dared to Be Arkham

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a new Arkham game in all but name. It combines the combat of the Rocksteady series, the open world of Arkham Knight, and a shedload of TT Games humour โ€” and the result is the highest-rated LEGO game ever made, and one of the most entertaining open-world action games of 2026.

Six Eras, One Batman

Rather than focusing on a single linear storyline, the game shifts between major points in Batman's legacy โ€” from his origins and training with the League of Shadows to his later years as a veteran, technologically advanced vigilante, jumping between comic and movie-inspired versions of Gotham's greatest hero with confidence. In one era, you might be stalking the corridors of the Ace Chemicals plant inspired by Tim Burton's 1989 film. In another, you're running through Arkham Asylum in a near-perfect recreation of Rocksteady's game, except now it's funny. Legacy of the Dark Knight somehow manages to stitch together everything from Batman Begins to Knightfall to Arkham Asylum to Batman: The Animated Series into a single, cohesive tale.

01

Origins

League of Shadows training. Bruce alongside Talia al Ghul. Batman Begins-inspired.

02

Gotham Rises

Carmine Falcone, Jim Gordon, Burton's Gotham aesthetic. Noir tones and dark comedy.

03

Freeze & Batgirl

Mr. Freeze's winter siege of Gotham. Batgirl joins as playable partner, hacking in tow.

04

Dynamic Duo

Robin to Nightwing. Dick Grayson's arc across the game's most character-driven chapter.

05

Arkham

The game's narrative peak. Joker, Scarecrow hallucination sequences, Arkham prison break. Matt Berry as Bane.

06

Legacy

The veteran Batman. Tech-heavy gadgets, full Gotham open world, densest fan-service in any chapter.

The Arkham Influence

Taking inspiration from Rocksteady's Arkham titles, TT Games has delivered the best-playing LEGO game to date. Fans of the Arkham games will immediately feel that series' influence, which elevates the usual ultra-simple button-mashing mechanics of previous LEGO games by adding Rocksteady's signature system โ€” different enemy types have unique attacks, some of which must be dodged, while others can be countered with the familiar button input appearing above their heads before striking.

The result is combat that is immediately readable to any Arkham veteran while still being accessible to its younger LEGO audience. There are three difficulty levels โ€” a first for the LEGO franchise โ€” though the highest level was only mildly challenging. The combat offers a surprising amount of depth; its more cartoony vibe allows for far more creative uses of the Bat-cast's toolbelts.

"The game's final two chapters, the strongest in the game, are so full of incredible Batman fan service and hyperspecific call-backs that I was smiling from ear to ear. This section also introduces Bane, voiced by Matt Berry โ€” utterly inspired casting that made me wish he were the main antagonist in not just every chapter of this game, but every game in general."

Six Characters, Six Toolbelts

With half a dozen playable characters, each with their own unique weapons, skills, and abilities, combat is as varied as it is fluid. Nightwing's electrified gadgets are a personal favourite, though the upgraded Batman ability that lets him toss three Batarangs at once is easily the most used tool. The game does a good job of making you want to use the varied characters and gadgets while also mechanically encouraging you to do so โ€” certain puzzles require specific characters. Need to hack a gadget? Batgirl needs to swap in.

Each chapter introduces a new companion for Batman โ€” training alongside Talia al Ghul at the League of Shadows, taking on Carmine Falcone with Jim Gordon, battling Mr. Freeze with Batgirl, and seeing Dick Grayson's journey from Robin to Nightwing. The character roster is the deepest TT Games has ever created for a single LEGO title, and most of them genuinely feel distinct rather than reskinned variations.

Gotham as an Open World

The open-world Gotham is Legacy of the Dark Knight's most impressive single achievement. It's oppressive, full of neon against tall dark structures, and of course, constantly raining. Gotham itself is a canvas on which TT Games has painted as many references as they possibly could. Players can grapple, glide, or drive through the environment, zipping from building to building with Batman's grapple launcher, soaring over the city with the Batglider, or cruising around in style with a range of Batmobiles and Batcycles.

Side activities, crimes, AR Trial challenges, Puzzle Rooms, and WayneTech Cache hunts fill the map generously. The density of content is comparable to Arkham Knight's Gotham, which is high praise. The Batcave is a wonderfully customisable hub that tracks your collection progress, displays your vehicles and suits, and serves as the emotional centrepiece of the whole experience.

Where It Falls Short

Stealth is Legacy of the Dark Knight's least consistent element โ€” it's either far too simple, with enemies lined up with their backs to you, or simply intended as an entrance move, with enemies so clustered up that you can only take out one or two before being seen. The stealth sections never approach the tension or satisfaction of the Arkham originals they're clearly referencing. They feel like they were added as a genre obligation rather than a genuine design decision.

Nightwing felt less distinct from his younger Robin self, as both wield escrima sticks and their gadgets are nearly identical. Catwoman is also present, and while enjoyable to play early on, she feels cast aside by the story's conclusion. The character writing is stronger in the middle chapters than at either end โ€” the prologue is too brief and the finale slightly rushed given how much groundwork the middle sections lay.

And while it's the highest-rated LEGO game ever made, it is still a LEGO game. The combat ceiling is lower than Arkham's. The humour occasionally deflates dramatic moments that might have landed harder with restraint. If you bounced off the LEGO formula before, Legacy of the Dark Knight won't fully convert you โ€” though it will get closer than anything the series has previously attempted.

What Works

  • Highest-rated LEGO game of all time โ€” and it earns it
  • Arkham-inspired combat genuinely elevates the formula
  • Six distinct playable characters with unique toolkits
  • Gotham open world is stunning, dense and rewarding
  • Matt Berry as Bane is the greatest casting decision in gaming history
  • Chapter 5 (Arkham chapter) is an all-timer LEGO level
  • Batcave customisation is deeply satisfying
  • 86+ years of Batman lovingly stitched together
  • Local co-op throughout โ€” best played with someone

What Doesn't

  • Stealth sections are either trivial or awkward โ€” never tense
  • Nightwing and Robin feel too similar
  • Catwoman underserved by the story's final act
  • Even on the hardest difficulty it's not truly challenging
  • Collectible cleanup can feel repetitive in late game
  • No Switch 2 version at launch

I Am Batman โ€” Full Platinum Roadmap

1Platinum
3Gold
4Silver
44Bronze

Difficulty: 4/10 โ€” Estimated Time: 30โ€“40 hours โ€” Missable Trophies: None โ€” Online Required: No โ€” Minimum Playthroughs: 1

Legacy of the Dark Knight has one of the most approachable Platinum lists in recent memory for an open-world game. Nothing is missable, nothing is locked behind difficulty, and the vast majority of trophies unlock naturally through thorough story + open-world play. The three Golds โ€” Story Complete, All Side Activities, All Collectibles โ€” form the backbone. Everything else fills in around them.

๐Ÿ’ก
Best approach: If you're aiming for the Platinum without turning the game into a second job, tackle as much as possible during the main story instead of leaving everything for a giant cleanup session later. Most chapter trophies, character unlocks, and district achievements unlock naturally just by progressing through the campaign โ€” it's worth taking your time and poking around Gotham instead of sprinting from mission to mission.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

STEP 1

๐Ÿฆ‡ Story Playthrough โ€” All 6 Chapters (12โ€“18 Hours)

Play through all six chapters and the prologue. Explore each chapter's environment thoroughly as you go โ€” don't sprint the critical path. Most bronze trophies, all character unlocks, and six chapter completion trophies all pop here.

  • Complete every story mission in each chapter before moving to the next
  • Talk to every NPC โ€” some unlock bonus missions only available during story chapters
  • Use all six characters regularly โ€” don't ignore Catwoman and Batgirl
  • Work on combat trophies naturally: counter streaks, stealth takedowns, combo chains
  • Pick up Red Bricks and WayneTech Caches as you encounter them โ€” don't leave cleanup for later
STEP 2

๐ŸŒ† Open-World Gotham โ€” Side Activities & Events (10โ€“14 Hours)

After story credits, the full open world of Gotham is yours. The Gold "Hopefully, because he's busy" requires completing every side activity. This is the biggest post-story time investment โ€” work district by district using the map.

  • Complete all crimes across every Gotham district
  • Finish all AR Trial challenges โ€” gold medals required for some trophies
  • Complete all 15 Puzzle Rooms across Gotham
  • Clear all world events and emergency calls
  • The map filters by activity type โ€” use it to track what's outstanding per district
STEP 3

๐Ÿ—‚๏ธ Collectibles โ€” Red Bricks, WayneTech, Batcave Trophies (5โ€“8 Hours)

The Gold "A Watchful Collector" requires finding all collectibles. This covers Red Bricks (scattered in the open world), WayneTech Caches, and all 24 Batcave Trophies. Red Bricks are the trickiest โ€” many are hidden behind specific character abilities.

  • Red Bricks are marked on the map after purchasing the Brick Detector upgrade โ€” buy it early
  • Some Red Bricks require a specific character ability to access โ€” return with the right character
  • WayneTech Caches glow faintly blue โ€” use Detective Vision to locate them in cluttered areas
  • All 24 Batcave Trophies must be physically brought to the Batcave and placed on display
STEP 4

๐Ÿฆธ Suits, Vehicles & Batcave Upgrades (3โ€“5 Hours)

Two Silver trophies require unlocking all Batsuits and all vehicles. Both are purchased with Studs at the Batcave. The Silver "Holy Skill Upgrades, Batman!" requires all skill upgrades purchased for all characters.

  • Spend Studs on suits and vehicles progressively โ€” don't hoard currency
  • Complete the 5 Batcave expansions (marked with wrench icons) before buying cosmetics
  • All skill upgrades across all six characters must be maxed
  • Place at least one prop in the Batcave for the decoration trophy
DONE

๐Ÿ† "I Am Batman." โ€” Platinum Unlocked

At ~5% Platinum rate on PSN (very early data โ€” expected to rise), this is an accessible Platinum for any Batman or LEGO fan. The list is fair, the game is fun, and every trophy feels earned through actual engagement with the content rather than busywork grinding.
