Louder, Weirder, Same Duct Tape

High on Life 2 is exactly the sequel you'd expect: bigger, brasher, funnier in places and more annoying in others, and held together with the same charming jank as the original. If the first game's relentless, talking-gun motormouth comedy clicked with you, the sequel doubles down. If it didn't, nothing here will change your mind.

You're once again a bounty hunter armed with a small arsenal of sentient, wisecracking guns — the Gatlians — each voiced by a comedian who will not, under any circumstances, shut up. The sequel sends you chasing a new spread of bounties across three sprawling, colour-saturated hub worlds, dropping you into linear story missions that gleefully lampoon everything from murder conventions to cult dads to space Columbo. It is, at its best, the most quotable shooter on PS5.

Comedy first, shooter second

The gunplay is improved but still the means rather than the end. Each Gatlian doubles as a traversal and puzzle tool, and the moment-to-moment combat is snappier and more varied than the original's. But you're not here for the shooting — you're here for the bits, and Squanch knows it. The hubs are stuffed with optional nonsense: skateparks, slug races, crane games, fishing, escape rooms, a museum of bounty-hunting history, and yes, 34 romanceable erotic worm monsters. It's a comedy theme park, and the density of jokes-per-minute is genuinely impressive.

When it lands, it's wonderful. When it doesn't, the relentlessness can grate — the same gun cracking the same kind of joke for the fortieth time in an hour is a lot, and the game has no off switch for its own voice. Your mileage will depend entirely on your tolerance for that firehose.

"Louder, weirder, and somehow better." Critics split hard on this chaotic comedy — from a glowing 95 to a measured 6 — landing it at a 'mixed but beloved' 71 on Metacritic. It's the definition of a know-what-you're-getting game.

The jank tax

It's also rough. Performance hitches, bugs, and the odd broken script are part of the package, and the technical polish lags well behind the ambition. The story takes a step back from the first game's surprisingly sturdy arc, leaning so hard into improv-style chaos that it sometimes forgets to be about anything. It's a 71-on-Metacritic game for honest reasons — but it's also the kind of game whose fans adore it well past what the score suggests.

For trophy hunters, here's the good news: this is a short, fun, low-stress platinum — no difficulty trophies, 15–20 hours, and almost everything doable in a single playthrough. The catch is that it's heavily missable: nearly half the trophies are one-shot gags tied to specific story missions in areas you can never revisit, and there's no chapter select. Miss the moment to burn Kreg's pants or draw a wiener at Murdercon and your only fix is a fresh save. Our full guide below flags every missable, mission by mission, so you can platinum this chaos in one clean run.

The Verdict — Pros

  • Genuinely, frequently very funny
  • Snappier combat and smarter Gatlian gadgets
  • Three dense hubs packed with absurd side content
  • A short, low-stress, genuinely fun platinum
  • Fans will adore it well past its score

The Verdict — Cons

  • The non-stop comedy firehose wears thin
  • Bugs, hitches and rough technical polish
  • Story is a step back from the original
  • So many one-shot missables, no chapter select

Missables
Easy platinum, brutal missables. There are no difficulty trophies and you can platinum in a single ~15–20h run — but 13 trophies are missable, almost all one-shot gags during story missions in areas you can never return to, and there's no chapter select. Follow a mission-by-mission checklist (our Story and Missables pages flag every one) so you don't have to start a whole new save for a single wiener drawing.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

Step 1

Play with a missables checklist open

The single most important tip: keep our Missables list beside you. Every story mission hides one-shot trophies (burn Kreg's pants, the laser maze, the wiener drawing, the tax quiz) in places you can never revisit. Grab each as you reach it.

Step 2

Finish the story & all bounties

Work through every story bounty mission to the final boss (Trial of the Century). Don't forget The Good Ending — it's a one-shot choice in the opening minutes (shoot your sister after the surrender).

Step 3

Sweep the three hubs for collectibles

The hubs stay open after the story, so clean up here: all 21 Wanted Posters (Unwanted), the 6 game cartridges (Throne of Games → 8-Bit Warrior), Dr. Gurgula holograms, the museum exhibits, the crane-game pillows and the fishing aquarium.

Step 4

Clear the hub activities

Knock out every skatepark challenge (Pro Skater), three slug races in each hub (Phony Hawk), all three B.A.L.L. GUYS, the escape rooms (Ankhs For The Memories) and the oddball gigs (Jeppy escort, taxi race).

Step 5

Mop up the grinds → platinum

Romance all 34 erotic worm monsters and tidy any stragglers. When the last trophy pops, A Life Well Lived is yours.
