A Homecoming Soaked in Blood

Resident Evil Requiem is the rarest kind of sequel: one that honours three decades of history while feeling genuinely new. Capcom's ninth mainline entry splices the over-the-shoulder dread of the modern remakes onto the fixed-tension survival horror of the originals, and the seam barely shows. It is the best-reviewed mainline Resident Evil since RE4 — and it has earned every word.

You play Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst dragged back to the ruins of Raccoon City to investigate a fresh outbreak in the Wrenwood district. Grace is no super-soldier; she's brittle, frightened and brilliant, and the early hours lean hard into that vulnerability. Then the game pulls its masterstroke — switching, at key moments, to a familiar returning hero whose confident, combat-forward chapters play like a different game entirely. Requiem is two survival-horror philosophies in one box, and it lets each breathe.

The blood collector changes everything

Grace's signature tool is the blood collector, a device that harvests "microsamples" of infected blood from the environment and downed enemies, which you then refine into ammo, healing and upgrades. It reframes every encounter as a risk-reward equation: do you push deeper into a nest of zombies to bleed them dry, or back off and stay safe but starved? It's the best new survival-horror mechanic in years, and the whole economy — credits, the supply box, weapon upgrades, analysis-unlocked recipes — orbits it intelligently.

The journey is a greatest-hits tour that never feels like fan service for its own sake: the flooded care center, a return to the R.P.D., the descent into Umbrella's ARK facility, a white-knuckle highway set piece, and a final, genuinely affecting choice about a girl named Elpis. New horrors — the Licker β2, the lumbering Chunks, the singing horrors of the care center — sit comfortably beside a Super Tyrant that had us grinning ear to ear.

"Requiem successfully splices two separate strains of survival horror together." — IGN, 9/10. With an 88 Metascore it's the highest-rated mainline RE since the 2005 original RE4.

So why not a 10?

A handful of pacing wobbles keep it from perfection. The mid-game sags slightly as the two playstyles trade off, a couple of the returning-hero sections feel like they belong to a louder, action-ier game, and the inventory-management old guard may find the modern conveniences a touch too generous on Standard. These are quibbles against a near-flawless whole.

For trophy hunters, do not be fooled by the "easy platinum" reputation floating around. The list is not complex, but it is demanding: a full clear on the brutal Insanity difficulty, a complete run with no herbs or med injectors, a run where Grace never touches the blood collector, and a sub-four-hour speedrun. Stack what you can, but you are looking at three to four playthroughs and some real nerve. Our full guide below breaks down all 50 trophies, the smartest stacking order, and every collectible.

The Verdict — Pros

  • Two survival-horror styles fused into one superb whole
  • The blood collector is the best new horror mechanic in years
  • A loving, spoiler-packed return to Raccoon City & the R.P.D.
  • Grace is a vulnerable, compelling new lead
  • Best-reviewed mainline RE since RE4

The Verdict — Cons

  • Mid-game pacing dips as the two styles trade off
  • Some action-hero sections clash with the dread
  • Standard difficulty is a little too forgiving for purists
  • Platinum's challenge runs are tougher than the list looks

Harder than its reputation. The platinum hinges on four challenge runs — an Insanity clear, a no-herbs/no-injectors clear (Never Touch the Stuff), a no-blood-collector Grace clear (Minimalist), and a sub-4-hour speedrun (Speed Demon). Most can be stacked together on a lower difficulty, but Insanity must be its own run. Plan your stacks before you start — it saves a whole playthrough.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

Step 1

Blind run on Standard (Modern)

Play naturally and soak up the story. Grab collectibles as you pass them — files, safes, BSAA containers and Mr. Raccoon memoriams — and learn the combat (parries, hatchet finishers, the blood collector). This unlocks the difficulty trophies up to Rising Agent and most one-off combat/system trophies.

Step 2

The big stack: Speed Demon + Never Touch the Stuff + Minimalist

On a lower difficulty, run a tightly-optimised playthrough that stacks all three restriction trophies at once: finish in under four hours, use no healing, and have Grace never use the blood collector. With a guide and a known route this single run knocks out three of the hardest trophies together.

Step 3

The Insanity run (Remarkable Agent)

The marquee challenge. Insanity has tougher enemies, scarcer resources and no auto-saves to lean on. Play it carefully and slowly — the opposite of Step 2 — using everything you've learned. This is its own dedicated playthrough.

Step 4

Cleanup collectibles & the library

Mop up anything missed: every safe (No Safe is Safe), all BSAA containers (Crate Expectations), all files (Case Closed) and all Mr. Raccoon memoriams (You Little Rascal!). Then unlock and view every Model (Model Mania) and Concept Art (Curator) in the bonus library.

Step 5

Grind out the counters → platinum

Tidy the cumulative trophies that carry across saves — 5,000 blood microsamples (Bloodlust), 200,000 credits (Credit Where Credit Is Due), 300 enemies (Seasoned Pro). When the last one pops, Requiem is yours.
