Twenty-three years after it first terrified PS2 owners, Crimson Butterfly remains the high-water mark of Japanese horror gaming — and Team Ninja's full remake treats that legacy with the reverence it deserves. This is still the scariest entry in the series, now wearing new clothes that mostly suit it.

You play Mio Amakura, who follows her twin sister Mayu down an overgrown path and into Minakami Village — the "All God's Village," a place that swallows outsiders and never lets them leave. The village is frozen in the aftermath of a botched Crimson Sacrifice: a ritual in which one twin was meant to strangle the other so the pair could merge into a single crimson butterfly and seal the Hellish Abyss beneath the village. When Yae fled and her sister Sae was sacrificed alone, the ritual failed catastrophically — and Sae's vengeful spirit now reaches for Mayu, desperate to make the sisters finish what hers could not.

A camera against the dark

Your only weapon is the Camera Obscura, an antique that can wound and capture spirits on film. Combat is an act of nerve: instead of running from a ghost, you must raise the viewfinder, hold it on a charging apparition, and wait — letting it fill the frame for a stronger shot, the "Fatal Frame," that lands at the last possible second. It is one of the most ingenious horror mechanics ever designed, weaponising the exact instinct (look away) that the genre usually exploits. The remake layers in new techniques — dodges, Phantom Exposés, the Unbinding of Blood — that give the photography real depth without diluting the dread.

The overhaul is comprehensive. Team Ninja has rebuilt the visuals and audio from the ground up and swapped the original's fixed cinematic cameras for a modern over-the-shoulder view. New is the ability to hold Mayu's hand as you lead her through the dark — a small, aching touch that makes the bond at the story's heart tangible. The village has never looked more beautiful or more wrong.

The cost of a remake

Not every change lands. The new free camera, for all its comfort, sometimes robs a scene of the suffocating framing the 2003 original used to such devastating effect, and purists will feel the loss. Critics were split for exactly this reason — review scores ran from a harsh 6 to a glowing 8.5 — and on PS5 the consensus landed at "good, not transcendent." The pacing sags in the middle chapters, and a handful of the remake's quality-of-life additions make a famously oppressive game feel a touch safer than it should.

None of that changes the essential truth: this is a masterpiece of atmosphere, faithfully preserved and now far easier to recommend to a new generation. For trophy hunters it's a meaty but fair platinum — you'll need every ending, a Nightmare-difficulty run, complete ghost lists and all the village's grim documents, but chapter select and New Game carry-over make the cleanup methodical rather than punishing.
