A World Worth Getting Lost In

Crimson Desert is a Frankenstein's monster of a game โ€” stitched together from Zelda's freedom, Dark Souls' boss design, Devil May Cry's combat flair, and the sheer scale of Red Dead Redemption 2 โ€” and against all odds, it mostly works.

The World of Pywel

Pearl Abyss's debut single-player title is set on the continent of Pywel, a vast high-fantasy landmass teeming with rival factions, ancient ruins, clockwork cities, and a mysterious sky-realm called the Abyss. You play as Kliff, a gruff Scottish mercenary whose faction โ€” the Greymanes โ€” is ambushed and scattered by the rival Black Bears. What begins as a revenge story slowly, confusingly, mutates into a supernatural adventure involving dimensional rifts and falling artifacts from another world.

The world itself is the undeniable star. Pywel is rendered in a single, seamless location โ€” no loading screens between regions โ€” and from any high point you can see every inch of it. It's genuinely breathtaking. Green plains bleed into arid red canyons, snow-capped peaks loom over fishing villages, and floating Abyss islands drift above it all. Within hours of starting, you'll be distracted by distant towers, caves, and question marks that pull you off the critical path and into something wonderful.

Combat: Controlled Chaos

Crimson Desert's combat is the best reason to stay. Kliff can chain fast strikes and heavy slashes into fluid combos, grapple enemies and hurl them into each other, block, parry, and counter. Add in wrestling moves, elemental weapon enhancements, and skills learned by literally watching enemies fight, and you get a system that rewards experimentation above all else. There are no character classes โ€” the more moves you unlock, the larger your toolbox becomes.

"Imagine sneaking up on an NPC just to fling them into a camp of bandits to knock everything over. Then your character dives headfirst into the pile before unleashing a flurry of sword slashes and shield bashes. It's chaotic. It's fun. It's Crimson Desert."

Boss fights are the combat system's greatest showcase. Multi-phase encounters that would feel at home in a Souls game โ€” the Devil of the Reed Field's three-phase fight is a notorious early wall โ€” sit alongside massive dragon battles and Shadow of the Colossus-style setpieces. When the combat clicks, it clicks hard.

The Story: A Beautiful Mess

Crimson Desert's biggest flaw is its narrative. The game throws you into the action immediately, then has its protagonist apparently die, only to recover moments later with no clear sense of time passed. From there, the story lurches between grounded mercenary drama and sci-fi Abyss shenanigans without ever fully committing to either. Western fantasy, steampunk, and Eastern themes collide without cohering. Characters talk at each other rather than to each other.

It's a shame, because the bones of something great are here. The revenge premise is compelling, Kliff is a likeable brute, and the world's lore โ€” buried in the Knowledge tab โ€” is genuinely rich. But the storytelling itself fails to deliver on any of it. Cutscenes can't be skipped, only fast-forwarded, which becomes painful in the game's more meandering chapters.

Exploration and Side Content

Where Crimson Desert earns its score back is in its side content. The world is packed with emergent encounters, contained storylines, faction quests, puzzle-filled ruins, and environmental challenges that unfold naturally as you wander. There are no yellow paint guides or waypoint arrows โ€” you're trusted to be curious, and rewarded for it. Dynamic NPC relationships, animal bonding, base-building, trading, horse taming, and even dragon riding are all present, sometimes overwhelming in their density.

The inventory system โ€” infamous at launch for being impossibly cramped โ€” has been patched significantly, and post-launch updates have added fast travel points, performance improvements, and quality-of-life fixes. Pearl Abyss has been impressively responsive to player feedback, shipping nearly 15 major patches within the first two months.

What Works

  • One of the most breathtaking open worlds ever made
  • Combat is deep, expressive, and endlessly entertaining
  • Massive amount of side content and emergent encounters
  • Boss fights rival any in the genre
  • Continuous post-launch improvements from Pearl Abyss
  • No hand-holding โ€” freedom to explore from the start
  • Dragon riding, jetpacks, mechs โ€” pure joy

What Doesn't

  • Story is confusing and thematically incoherent
  • Narrative pacing is disjointed and often dull
  • System overload โ€” too many mechanics at once
  • Inventory management remains frustrating
  • Unskippable cutscenes (only fast-forward)
  • Not supported on Intel Arc GPUs at launch

Pywel Legend โ€” Full Platinum Roadmap

1Platinum
4Gold
10Silver
20Bronze

Difficulty: 7/10 โ€” Estimated Time: 200โ€“300+ hours โ€” Missable Trophies: 5 โ€” Online Required: No

The platinum trophy for Crimson Desert, Pywel Legend, requires you to complete every challenge category in the game, finish the main story, and collect all 34 other trophies. It's a marathon, not a sprint โ€” expect to spend the better part of your gaming year on this one.

โš ๏ธ
Missable Trophies Alert: Five trophies are currently missable โ€” Shadowlord, Battlefield Conqueror, Grand Collector of Arms, Unvanquished Strategist, and Brilliant Tactician. Complete all challenges as early as possible. Do not liberate enemy camps before finishing their challenges. Do not sell, discard, or break the 10 Special Weapons.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

STEP 1

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Unfog the Map First (25+ Hours)

Before anything else, unlock all 8 Hidden Bells to reveal the full map. This makes locating collectibles and challenges dramatically easier. Also activate fast travel points as you go.

  • Find and ring all 8 Hidden Bells (except Pailune Bell โ€” requires story progress)
  • Activate Fast Travel Points throughout Pywel
  • Use Kliff's Guiding Light (press +) to detect nearby Sealed Abyss Artifacts with a blue shimmer
  • Explore every white "?" search area you encounter โ€” these are exploration challenges
STEP 2

โš”๏ธ Complete All Challenges Before Camp Liberation

This is the most critical missable warning in the game. Many challenges require enemy camps to be active. Once liberated, you cannot re-do them. Tackle all combat, strategy, and camp challenges before clearing any location permanently.

  • Complete Shadowlord challenges at camps before liberating them
  • Finish Battlefield Conqueror requirements at each battle site
  • Keep all 10 Special Weapons for Grand Collector of Arms
  • Complete Mastery and Operation challenges for Unvanquished Strategist and Brilliant Tactician
STEP 3

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Relocate Your Camp โ€” Master Camper

Set up and relocate your camp as required by the story and faction quest chain. Unlock the Master Camper trophy early to cross it off the list. Upgrade your camp through Faction Quests, focusing on quests that reward Medium Bags for inventory space.

STEP 4

๐Ÿ“– Complete the Main Story โ€” Expert Storyteller

Progress through the main questline to finish Kliff's story and unlock the Expert Storyteller gold trophy. This is the hardest single trophy due to the volume of boss encounters. Stock up on potions โ€” some boss fights are won or lost based on HP items in your quick menu.

  • Craft potions and health items regularly โ€” essential for tough bosses
  • The Devil of the Reed Field has three phases โ€” be prepared
  • Unlock Oongka and Damiane as additional playable characters through story progression
STEP 5

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Weapon Mastery Trophies (8 Trophies)

Complete all challenges for each of the eight weapon categories. This includes swords, rapiers, bows, spears, greatswords, axes, dual wields, and ranged weapons. Challenges range from defeating a set number of enemies to executing specific combat techniques.

STEP 6

๐Ÿงฉ Exploration & Puzzle Challenges โ€” Expert Explorer

The Expert Explorer gold trophy requires solving every puzzle in the game โ€” the most time-consuming challenge trophy. Ancient Ruins puzzles, Abyss Artifact hunts, and territory exploration all count. Use the Guiding Light ability constantly and check the world map for unexplored "?" icons.

  • Complete all Ancient Ruins for the Puzzle Solver challenge
  • Collect all Sealed Abyss Artifacts along roads and hidden locations
  • Scale every major peak for Conqueror of Spires
  • Explore all 573 territories of Pywel
STEP 7

๐ŸŒฟ Lifestyle, Hunting & Collection Trophies

The final stretch covers Crimson Desert's lifestyle systems: trading, horse taming, hunting, minigames, and NPC relationship bonding. None are missable, but all are time-consuming. Take it slow and enjoy the world at this stage.

  • Tame horses through the wildlife bonding system
  • Complete minigames including the rock-paper-scissors encounters
  • Engage the economy through trading and banking
  • Bond with wildlife and NPCs for relationship trophies
DONE

๐Ÿ† Pywel Legend โ€” Platinum Unlocked

Once all 34 other trophies are claimed, Pywel Legend unlocks automatically. You're now a certified Platinum hunter and one of only ~2.5% of players to complete Crimson Desert.

Pro Tip: Cumulative challenges sometimes track retroactively, but one-off combat requirements won't. Do combat-specific challenges as you encounter them. If you miss a camp or location, you may have to wait for a new playthrough โ€” there is no quest replay after completing the story, but the world remains open for free roam.
