MOUSE: P.I. For Hire

A hand-drawn 1930s fever dream where rubber-hose cartoons pack live ammunition โ€” and the detective work is just as sharp as the gunplay.

Who Framed the Big Mouse Party?

MOUSE: P.I. For Hire shouldn't work as well as it does. A first-person shooter drawn entirely in scratchy, black-and-white 1930s rubber-hose animation sounds like a one-joke novelty โ€” but Fumi Games has built a genuinely confident shooter underneath the gorgeous gimmick, and wrapped it in a detective story with real teeth.

You play Jack Pepper, a hardboiled mouse gumshoe and former war hero working penny-ante cases to cover his gambling debts. When a missing-magician job in prohibition-era Mouseburg spirals into a string of vanishing shrews and a dead actress, Pepper pulls a thread that unravels the whole rotten city โ€” a conspiracy run by the Big Mouse Party that reaches from crooked cops all the way to interdimensional portal experiments. Troy Baker voices Pepper with exactly the weary, wisecracking gravel the role needs, and the writing keeps the noir tropes affectionate rather than tired.

A shooter that earns its swagger

The structure alternates between two modes and is smart about it. Investigation sections have you combing crime scenes for clues and pinning them to an evidence board to crack each case โ€” light puzzle work that grounds the world. Then the doors lock, the music kicks up, and MOUSE becomes a fast, chunky arena shooter: a deep arsenal of cartoon weapons, melee tools, throwable explosive barrels, and an escalating "D-Mousifier" ray-gun economy that rewards aggression. It's not reinventing the genre, but the moment-to-moment combat is punchy and reads beautifully against the high-contrast art.

And that art is the star. Every frame looks like a salvaged reel from a 90-year-old cartoon โ€” hand-drawn, monochrome, full of squash-and-stretch personality โ€” running at the speed of a modern FPS. Patryk Scelina's jazzy, brass-heavy score completes the illusion. It is, frame for frame, one of the most distinctive-looking games of the year.

"MOUSE wears its 1930s skin so completely that you stop noticing the gimmick within an hour โ€” and start noticing that the shooting, the cases, and the world are all quietly excellent."

Where the ink runs

It isn't flawless. The monochrome palette that makes MOUSE so striking can occasionally make a chaotic firefight hard to parse, and a handful of the investigation sections lean on hand-holding. Reviews ran the full spectrum because of it โ€” from Destructoid's rapturous 9.5 to IGN's more reserved 6 โ€” but the consensus (a "very positive" 94% on Steam, an 87% OpenCritic recommendation, and 730,000 copies sold) lands where we do: this is a stylish, substantial, lovingly made shooter that deserves the audience it found.

For trophy hunters, it's a friendly but attentive platinum. Nothing is gated behind difficulty and everything can be earned in a single playthrough โ€” but a large share of the trophies are missable, tied to collectibles, side jobs, and one-off combat feats. Go in with a checklist (ours is below) and The Platinum Falcon is a very achievable, very enjoyable grind.

The Verdict โ€” Pros

  • Jaw-dropping hand-drawn 1930s rubber-hose art
  • Punchy, satisfying arena gunplay with a deep arsenal
  • A genuinely good noir mystery, anchored by Troy Baker
  • Investigation sections add welcome variety
  • Brassy, period-perfect soundtrack

The Verdict โ€” Cons

  • Monochrome can muddy the busiest firefights
  • Some investigation beats over-explain themselves
  • Heavy reliance on missable collectibles
  • Pacing dips in the mid-game

Missables
โš  Missable-heavy platinum. Most trophies are missable โ€” they're tied to collectibles (Mouseburg Herald, Comic Strips, Baseball Cards), all 14 Side Jobs, case-specific clues, and one-off combat feats. None are gated behind difficulty and everything can be done in one playthrough, but use chapter/case select to clean up anything you missed, and keep a checklist as you go.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

Step 1

Play the story, collect as you go

Work through all four cases (Missing Magician, Shrew Shortage, Blue Betty, and the finale). Grab every clue, Herald, Comic Strip and Baseball Card you see, and pin all clues to the evidence board in each case for So, Whodunit?

Step 2

Knock out combat feats during fights

The arena shootouts are your chance for the explosive-barrel, multi-kill and crush trophies (Boom Town, Firestarter, Hole-y Trinity, M-m-muenster Kill!, Spike-D 16 TONS and more). Most stack naturally if you fight aggressively and use the environment.

Step 3

Do every Side Job

Complete all 14 Side Jobs for Real Deal Gumshoe (and Dime Novel Sleuth at 5). Many are missable per-area, so clear them as you reach each district.

Step 4

Max your arsenal & the card game

Upgrade every weapon to tier 3 (We'll B.A.N.G., ok?), unlock the X1 D-Mousifier from the Prize D-spenser (Everybody Loves Rayguns), and play the Baseball Cards mini-game for the deck trophies.

Step 5

Mop up collectibles & finish

Use case select to grab any missing Heralds (29โ€ฆ see note), Comic Strips (29 total) and Baseball Cards (41 total). Finish the game for Tip of the Cheeseberg, then the last trophy ticks over into The Platinum Falcon.
