STARFIELD

A Long Way to the Stars

When Starfield launched in 2023 it was the most ambitious โ€” and most divisive โ€” thing Bethesda had ever made. Nearly three years and a mountain of updates later, it arrives on PS5 as a genuinely better game: smoother, deeper, and finally bundled with the surface vehicle, expanded maps, difficulty sliders and the Shattered Space expansion that the launch version was crying out for.

The pitch hasn't changed. You're a miner-turned-spacefarer who stumbles onto an alien artifact and falls in with Constellation, the galaxy's last band of starry-eyed explorers. From there the Settled Systems open up: a thousand planets across a hundred-plus star systems, four meaty faction questlines, a city-sized hub in New Atlantis, and the freedom to be a bounty hunter, a corporate spy, a pirate, an outpost tycoon, or all of them at once.

The best Bethesda toy box yet

When Starfield is good, it's exceptional. The ship builder is the deepest creative system Bethesda has ever shipped โ€” you can spend hours bolting together a flying home, then actually fly it, board enemy vessels, and steal theirs. The faction quests are the studio's strongest writing in years; the Ryujin corporate-espionage arc and the Crimson Fleet pirate saga in particular are superb. And the central New Game Plus twist โ€” which reframes the entire campaign as a multiverse loop โ€” is one of the boldest swings in the genre.

On PS5 it runs and looks great, with the years of patches smoothing over the launch jank. The added Rev-8 land vehicle and the overhauled surface maps quietly fix the single biggest complaint, making planet-side exploration feel like exploration again instead of a loading-screen shuffle.

"Starfield is two games stitched together: a brilliant RPG of ships, factions and hand-crafted stories, wrapped around a procedural galaxy that's a mile wide and an inch deep. On PS5, the brilliant half finally wins more often than it loses."

Still reaching

The flaws that split players in 2023 haven't all vanished. The thousand planets are still mostly empty, procedurally-stitched backdrops, and fast travel remains the connective tissue holding the galaxy together โ€” this is a space game where you rarely fly between two points yourself. The main story takes too long to find its feet, and the moment-to-moment gunplay, while improved, is merely fine. Starfield asks for patience, and not everyone will want to give it.

But for trophy hunters, that scope becomes a feature. The PS5 platinum is long but low-stress: there's almost nothing missable, nothing tied to difficulty, and most of it comes naturally from doing what the game is best at โ€” running every faction questline, building ships and outposts, and grinding your way to level 100 across multiple New Game Plus loops. It's one of the most relaxing platinums of the year, and our full roadmap below maps the fastest route.

The Verdict โ€” Pros

  • The deepest ship-building system Bethesda's ever made
  • Excellent faction questlines (Ryujin & Crimson Fleet shine)
  • A bold New Game Plus / multiverse twist
  • PS5 version is the definitive one โ€” all updates + Shattered Space
  • Surface vehicle finally makes planets fun to roam

The Verdict โ€” Cons

  • 1,000 planets, most of them empty and procedural
  • Fast-travel-heavy โ€” you rarely actually fly anywhere
  • Main story is a slow starter
  • Gunplay is improved but still only okay

โœฆ Only the 50 base-game trophies are needed for the platinum. The Shattered Space, Terran Armada and Free Lanes DLC add 32 more Bronze trophies, but none are required for Starfield's Platinum. Almost nothing is missable and nothing is tied to difficulty โ€” this is a long but low-stress platinum, mostly gated behind reaching level 100 and visiting every star system.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

Step 1

Play the main story & all four factions

Run the Constellation main quest plus all four faction questlines โ€” UC Vanguard, Freestar Collective, Ryujin Industries and the Crimson Fleet. This is the bulk of the "named" trophies and a big chunk of your XP.

Step 2

Build, craft & tinker as you go

While questing, knock out the system trophies: build an outpost, connect cargo links, modify a ship, mod 50 weapons, craft 100 items, hack locks and computers. Most happen naturally if you engage with Starfield's systems.

Step 3

Use New Game Plus to reach level 100

Reach for the Stars (level 100, Gold) is the longest grind. Completing the main story unlocks NG+, which keeps your level โ€” repeated NG+ runs (the main quest gets shorter each loop) are the fastest XP. Bank skill magazines and activities along the way.

Step 4

Sweep the galaxy & mop up counters

Finish The Stars My Destination (visit every star system) and the cumulative counters โ€” 100 planets, 300 humans, 300 creatures, 500 organic/inorganic resources, 10 ships, 20 magazines. These tick over during the level-100 grind.

Step 5

Hit level 100 โ†’ Platinum

Once level 100 and every star system are done, the last base-game trophy flips into the Platinum. DLC trophies are entirely optional from here.
