The Review

A masterpiece, faithfully and fearlessly remade

Some context first: this was our first time through James Sunderland's story. We'd never played the 2001 original, but we've loved the Silent Hill films since we were kids, and the fog, the sirens and the dread were already part of our DNA. So we came to Silent Hill 2 with the atmosphere in our bones and the story completely unspoiled. It floored us.

James gets a letter from his wife Mary, who has been dead for three years, asking him to meet her in “our special place”. What follows is less a monster hunt than a slow, devastating walk through grief and guilt, told through the people he meets: Angela, Eddie, Laura and Maria, who looks exactly like Mary. The town reshapes itself around what James won't admit, and the reveal lands like a punch. It's the rare horror story that is genuinely sad, and it stays with you long after the credits.

Bloober Team treated it with enormous respect. The fog-choked streets of South Vale, Wood Side and Blue Creek Apartments, Brookhaven Hospital and the Lakeview Hotel are rebuilt in stunning detail, with Akira Yamaoka's score and a sound design that makes every radio crackle land. The big surprise is the gameplay: the over-the-shoulder combat is weighty and tense (dodge, a heavy plank or pipe, scarce bullets), enemies hide and ambush, and the puzzles are clever and come in difficulty tiers. Pyramid Head, the Abstract Daddy and Eddie are unforgettable fights.

It isn't flawless. Some later areas run long, a few ambushes repeat the same trick, and the combat never tries to be more than functional survival horror. But this is the rare remake that feels essential: faithful where it matters, bolder where it can be, and absolutely terrifying. A 9/10, and a warm, fair platinum on top.

The verdict. One of the best horror stories in games, rebuilt with love. If, like us, you only knew Silent Hill from the films, this is the one to play. 9.0/10.
Platinum Roadmap

The road to You Made Me Happy

A relaxed 3/10 platinum over two playthroughs (20–30 hours). It's fully offline and difficulty never matters, so play on Light if you like. The work is planning: 20 trophies are missable, the three collectible trophies are single-run, and the endings respond to hidden behaviour. Endings save to your profile, so you can reload a late save for extra endings.

1Run 1: collectibles and one-offs. Turn the radio off as soon as you get it (Radio Silence), try the Observation Deck road first (No Turning Back Now), and sweep all 68 memos, 26 photos and 26 glimpses area by area. Pick up the missable secrets and use all five weapons (James of All Trades), shooting plenty for the 75 gun kills.
2Steer toward Maria, then reload for Leave and In Water. Play Run 1 as the Maria ending (stay by her side, ripe apple, don't inspect Mary's items), and manual-save at the last nine-square save point. Reload it for Leave (inspect Mary's photo and letter, full hallway talk) and In Water (Angela's Knife, low health).
3Run 2: New Game+. Grab the chainsaw at the ranch and make it a no-gun run (As Close as You Like) in under 10 hours. Collect the NG+ items for Rebirth, the Dog Key and the Blue Gem (UFO), and save before Room 312 to see them all.
4Cleanup. Check Merciless (50 stomps, a buggy counter) and the kill counts, and replay anything that didn't register. You Made Me Happy pops.
Watch the missables. Balloons (Apartment 207), the pizza, the lake, bread, Room 106 (second visit only) and the first-road trophy are all one-shot, and each collectible trophy needs a single run. Areas lock behind you with no chapter select, so follow our step-by-step walkthrough.

Details
Platinum β€” Collect all other trophies in the game. Pops when the other 43 are done. It's a relaxed 3/10 platinum over two playthroughs (20–30 hours). Run 1 sweeps all 68 memos, 26 Strange Photos and 26 Glimpses of the Past, the missable one-offs, and the three standard endings (reloading one late save). Run 2 is New Game+ for the chainsaw, the Rebirth, Dog and UFO endings, a no-guns run and a sub-10-hour clear. Tip: Difficulty settings have no trophy restrictions, so play on Light combat and puzzle difficulty if you only care about the platinum.
Story & Bosses 16 trophies

The main story in order, with the six boss fights. All unmissable: follow the story and they pop. Full Story & Bosses guide →

Enjoy Your Stay trophy

Enjoy Your Stay

Details
Bronze β€” Reach Silent Hill. Story: pops during the cutscene on Wiltse Road where James reaches the town and picks up the South Vale map. Unmissable. Tip: Before you walk down into town, turn back for No Turning Back Now: it's missable and it's your very first opportunity.
Nice and Cozy trophy

Nice and Cozy

Details
Bronze β€” Reach Wood Side Apartments. Story: leave the east side of South Vale and enter Wood Side Apartments. Pops as you arrive. Tip: Wood Side has the handgun (Apartment 217, in the red shopping cart), and the balloons for Let's NOT Party! are in Apartment 207.
Otherworldly trophy

Otherworldly

Details
Bronze β€” Enter the Otherworld for the first time. Story: pops when you go through the red door in Apartment 201 at Wood Side Apartments. Tip: Grabbing the handkerchief in Apartment 201 locks you out of the rest of Wood Side, so finish the balloons, both photos, the glimpse and the memos first.
Passed trophy

Passed

Details
Bronze β€” Make your way out of Blue Creek Apartments. Story: survive the first Pyramid Head encounter in Blue Creek Apartments. It's a 3-minute survival fight and he can't be killed: keep your distance, dodge his swings, and chip at him with the handgun if you like. After one minute he speeds up and wrecks the barricades. The trophy pops when you leave the building. Tip: The clock-puzzle rooms before this hold 2 photos and 2 glimpses. Entering the ‘S’ door room on 1F is the point of no return.
Uncanny trophy

Uncanny

Details
Bronze β€” Meet Maria. Story: pops after the cutscene at the Rosewater Park docks where James meets Maria. Tip: Rosewater Park's first nook on the right hides Strange Photo #7 on a stone bench, so grab it before you move on.
Admitted trophy

Admitted

Details
Bronze β€” Reach Brookhaven Hospital. Story: head out of the west side of South Vale and walk into Brookhaven Hospital. Tip: Three Strange Photos on the way (Heaven's Night, Moonlight Grove, Reverie Theater) are highly missable. Collect each before moving to the next building.
Nightmare Fuel trophy

Nightmare Fuel

Details
Bronze β€” Defeat the Flesh Lip. Boss (Brookhaven Hospital, after the Laura scene). Phase 1: it hangs from the ceiling and drops through the tiles. Its cage blocks bullets, so shoot the arm it hangs from or its exposed sides, and pipe it when it drops. Phase 2: it stays on the ground and rushes you with its mechanical arms. Dodge a lot and shoot it with the shotgun (around 10–12 blasts on Standard); its back is armoured. Tip: The shotgun is in the Women's Locker Room (first locker you open) earlier in the hospital.
Alone Again trophy

Alone Again

Details
Bronze β€” Survive the chase in Brookhaven Hospital. Story: survive the Pyramid Head chase in the hospital's Otherworld section. Keep running, follow the only open route, and don't stop to fight. Tip: The Otherworld hospital has 9 memos, 2 photos and a glimpse. Memo #46 on a stairway landing is highly missable.
Into the Abyss trophy

Into the Abyss

Details
Bronze β€” Reach the end of the long staircase. Story: in the Silent Hill Historical Society, keep walking down the enormously long staircase at the back. The trophy pops at the bottom. Tip: Strange Photo #17 sits behind the glass of a cabinet in the second room on the left. It's gone once you start down the stairs.
Unforgivable trophy

Unforgivable

Details
Bronze β€” Defeat the Abstract Daddy. Boss (Labyrinth). Phase 1: it lunges to grab you and uses stunning sound waves; the rifle from range works best. Between phases: find and smash three TVs around the maze, avoid it and pick up ammo on the way. Phase 2: it's slow, so dodge the lunges and unload the shotgun up close. Tip: Don't waste bullets on it while you're hunting the TVs. Breaking them is what moves the fight on.
Inner Sanctum trophy

Inner Sanctum

Details
Bronze β€” Find His room. Story: pops when you walk into Pyramid Head's octagonal room in the Labyrinth. Tip: The Labyrinth has only 2 photos and 1 glimpse, but Photo #21 (rotating cube, third visit) disappears once you enter the Ruined Area.
A Human Being trophy

A Human Being

Details
Bronze β€” Kill Eddie. Boss (end of the Labyrinth, meat-locker arena). Phase 1: he darts between the hanging carcasses. Listen for his footsteps (headphones help) and shoot with the rifle or handgun. Phase 2: he bursts pipes to fill the room with fog, so switch to the shotgun and punish him after his melee attacks. Phase 3: the conveyor starts and he slows down; finish him with the gun or the pipe. Tip: Save before the arena. Eddie's gun hurts, so take corners rather than trading shots in the open.
Glimmer of Hope trophy

Glimmer of Hope

Details
Bronze β€” Reach the Lakeview Hotel. Story: row across Toluca Lake and walk up through the garden to the Lakeview Hotel. Tip: Before rowing to the hotel, sit on the lake for Scourge of Toluca Lake, and grab Strange Photo #22 behind some steps before you board the boat.
Truly Special trophy

Truly Special

Details
Bronze β€” Reach Room 312. Story: pops when you enter Room 312 in the Lakeview Hotel. Tip: In New Game+, Room 312 is where the Bliss (drink the White Claudia before the tape) and UFO (fourth Blue Gem use) endings come together, so save before you go in.
Obsolete trophy

Obsolete

Details
Bronze β€” Destroy what you don't need. Boss (Lakeview Hotel Otherworld): the two Pyramid Heads. They share one health bar, so hit whichever is closer. They thrust and throw their spears; keep your distance and use the rifle (about 22–24 shots) or play safe with the pipe (about 22 hits on Standard). There are supplies in the corners. Tip: This comes right after the final nine-square save point. Make a manual save there, because every standard ending is replayed from it.
That Part of Me trophy

That Part of Me

Details
Bronze β€” Defeat Her. Final boss (Lakeview Hotel). Phase 1: she hovers, turns into moth swarms and grabs with tentacles; the rifle is ideal (about 10 hits). Phase 2: she drops from the ceiling (watch for sparks above); use the shotgun or handgun (6–8 blasts). Phase 3: fast leg strikes on the ground. Shoot from range or blast up close, and land the final blow after her third roar. Tip: If she's lying in a bed when you arrive, you're on the Maria ending; standing at the window means Leave or In Water.
All Endings 7 trophies

Six ending trophies plus the gold for the five classic endings. Endings save to your profile, so reload a late save for extras. Full All Endings guide →

Making Peace trophy

Making Peace

Details
Silver β€” Reach the "Leave" ending. Leave (the ‘good’ ending). Across the run: keep your health high, inspect Mary's Photo and Mary's Letter in your inventory several times (5–7), don't inspect Angela's Knife, and near the end listen to the whole conversation in the long hallway. Take the Rust-Coloured Egg door. Tip: Make a manual save at the last nine-square save point. After any ending, reload it, adjust the final factors and go again. Missable.
Vicious Circle trophy

Vicious Circle

Details
Silver β€” Reach the "Maria" ending. Maria. Stay close to her all game: talk to her at every optional prompt (the Historical Society door, the dress in the Jack's Inn upstairs room, Baldwin Mansion), check on her twice in Brookhaven (after the first bracelet and after the Rooftop Key), and check on her often in the Labyrinth. Don't let her take much damage. Put the Ripe Apple (not the Rotten one) on the mirror-puzzle plate in Lakeview Hotel, and don't inspect Mary's Photo, Mary's Letter or Angela's Knife. Skip the full hallway conversation and take the Scarlet Egg door. Tip: You'll know it worked if the final boss is lying in a bed. Players report that Quality mode can make the hallway talk play in full, so use Performance mode. Missable.
Only Way Out trophy

Only Way Out

Details
Silver β€” Reach the "In Water" ending. In Water, the ending that's hardest to steer. Inspect Angela's Knife five or more times, stay on low or critical health for long stretches (especially the last 10+ minutes and into the final fight, so don't heal before it), put the Rotten Apple in the mirror puzzle, listen to the full hallway conversation and take the Rust-Coloured Egg door. Don't inspect Mary's items. Tip: If you get Leave instead, reload the nine-square save, drop your health and look at the knife more. It can take a couple of tries, and NG+ is a second chance. Missable.
Defy Even Death trophy

Defy Even Death

Details
Silver β€” Reach the "Rebirth" ending. Rebirth (New Game+ only). Have all four ritual items in your inventory, then finish the game: Book of Crimson Ceremony (graveyard by the lake near the start, by the lone grave under the tree), White Chrism (table outside the Baldwin Mansion entrance), Obsidian Goblet (a wall crevice on the right in the Historical Society main room) and Book of Lost Memories (the Lakeview Hotel Lost & Found, where it replaces the NG note). Tip: The last item is in the hotel, so save before picking up Lost Memories if you want other endings from the same run. Missable.
The Goodest Boi trophy

The Goodest Boi

Details
Silver β€” Reach the "Dog" ending. Dog (New Game+ only). Get Broken Key Part 1 from the back room of The Pet Center (Neely St., South Vale East) and Broken Key Part 2 from the dog house through the gate on Katz Street. Combine them into the Dog Key and open the Observation Room near Room 312 in Lakeview Hotel. The ending plays straight away. Tip: Because it triggers instantly near Room 312, it takes about a minute to replay from a late save. Missable.
Tinfoil Hat trophy

Tinfoil Hat

Details
Silver β€” Reach the "UFO" ending. UFO (New Game+ only). Smash the left window of the Jewelers next to the Pet Center for the Blue Gem, then use it at all four spots: 1) the Saul Street Apartments roof (the eye graffiti on the vent), 2) the Rosewater Park pier where you met Maria, 3) just after you cross Toluca Lake by boat, and 4) Room 312. Tip: UFO is not needed for Party Like It's 2001, but it has its own silver. Missable.
Party Like It's 2001 trophy

Party Like It's 2001

Details
Gold β€” See all classic endings (Leave, Maria, In Water, Rebirth, Dog). Pops when you've seen Leave, Maria, In Water, Rebirth and Dog. Endings are saved to your profile, not to a save slot, so reloading counts. Tip: There are reports of the tracker sticking at 4/5. If that happens, replay whichever ending didn't register from your late save.
Memos, Photos & Glimpses 3 trophies

Three single-playthrough collectible trophies. Areas lock behind you, so collect as you go. Full Memos, Photos & Glimpses guide →

Archivist trophy

Archivist

Details
Silver β€” Collect all memos in a single playthrough. Find all 68 memos in one run. Nearly all are shared by New Game and New Game+; the one difference is #61, the Lost & Found Note (Lakeview Hotel) in NG, which becomes the Cryptic Letter (Bowl-O-Rama safe, code 1887) in NG+. Tip: Areas lock behind you, so use the per-area list and check the stats screen at the end. Missable.
Pieces Unarranged trophy

Pieces Unarranged

Details
Silver β€” Collect all the Strange Photos in a single playthrough. Find all 26 Strange Photos (the Polaroids) in one run. Eight or so are flagged highly missable because they sit right before a point of no return. Tip: Heaven's Night, Moonlight Grove, the Reverie Theater, the Historical Society, the rotating cube in the Labyrinth and the Toluca Lake steps are where people miss them. Missable.
Echoes trophy

Echoes

Details
Gold β€” Witness all glimpses of the past in a single playthrough. Find all 26 Glimpses of the Past (objects that flash and make a sound, references to the 2001 original) in one run. There's no in-game counter, so tick them off as you go. Tip: The rooftop glimpse in Brookhaven (#14) is the easiest to miss, because it disappears the moment you go into the next room. Missable.
Missable Secrets 7 trophies

Seven one-off secrets tied to specific rooms and moments. Almost all are missable. Full Missable Secrets guide →

No Turning Back Now trophy

No Turning Back Now

Details
Bronze β€” Try to leave Silent Hill in the Observation Deck area. Right after the opening cutscene at the Observation Deck, turn around and follow the road to the left all the way to the end. James turns himself back around and the trophy pops. Tip: It's the first thing you can do in the game and it's missable once you head down the trail, so do it straight away (and again in New Game+ if you forgot). Missable.
Let's NOT Party! trophy

Let's NOT Party!

Details
Bronze β€” Shoot all the balloons in Wood Side Apartments. In Apartment 207 (Wood Side, 2F) there are 11 balloons spelling “Welcome Home” on the wall. Pick up the handgun first (Apartment 217, red shopping cart), then shoot every balloon. Tip: Don't hit any balloon with a melee weapon first: a balloon popped by the plank no longer counts. Save at reception first. On Light there's plenty of ammo: 7 rounds in 217, 2 in 210, 3 in 207, 1 in 208, 3 in 205 and 3 at reception. Missable.
All Seems in Order trophy

All Seems in Order

Details
Bronze β€” Discover the secret of Room 106. Only on your second visit to Jack's Inn (South Vale West, after Brookhaven Hospital) is the wall behind the bed in Room 106 damaged. Inspect it for the trophy. Tip: The wall isn't damaged on your first visit, so don't look for it early, but don't forget it when you're back after the hospital. Missable.
Leftovers trophy

Leftovers

Details
Bronze β€” Find the pizza in Pete's Bowl-O-Rama. After Rosewater Park, head west to Pete's Bowl-O-Rama. The open pizza box is on a bench in the back left; inspect it. Tip: The same pizza is Glimpse of the Past #9. In New Game+, the safe here (code 1887) holds the Cryptic Letter memo and the Rusted Key for the Bliss ending. Missable.
Scourge of Toluca Lake trophy

Scourge of Toluca Lake

Details
Bronze β€” Spend 10 minutes out on Toluca Lake. After beating Eddie you get a rowing boat. Instead of rowing to the light, just sit on the lake for 10 minutes. You don't have to row; idling counts. Tip: You can't come back to the lake later, so do it the first time. Put the controller down and wait. Missable.
It's Bread trophy

It's Bread

Details
Bronze β€” Interact with bread. Lakeview Hotel, Employee Section: in the Kitchen (reached through the Freezer Room vent) there's a tray of bread on a table. Interact with it. Tip: It's a quick, silly trophy, but it's missable once you leave the employee area. Missable.
Lumberjack trophy

Lumberjack

Details
Bronze β€” Find the chainsaw. New Game+ only. Right at the start of NG+, past the graveyard, you'll hear a chainsaw near the Silent Hill Ranch. It's stuck in the log pile opposite the ranch sign. Tip: The chainsaw one-shots normal enemies and melts bosses, which makes it perfect for As Close as You Like and the melee kill count. You also need it to break the green car's window for the Stillness ending. Missable.
Combat & Kill Counts 6 trophies

Kill counts that add up over every playthrough, plus the one-run weapon sweep. Full Combat & Kill Counts guide →

Merciless trophy

Merciless

Details
Bronze β€” Finish off 50 enemies with a stomp attack. Press R2 on an enemy that's on the ground. Sometimes James stomps instead of swinging, and the stomp has to be the killing blow. It adds up over all playthroughs. Tip: The counter is known to be unreliable. Make stomps easy by shooting enemies in the legs or knocking them down with a melee hit, then stand at their head and press R2. The small bugs die to a single stomp. A common farm is in Blue Creek Apartments: save, grab the ammo in the crib to spawn a bug, stomp it and reload.
No Big Deal trophy

No Big Deal

Details
Bronze β€” Kill 75 enemies with ranged weapons. Get 75 kills with the handgun, shotgun or rifle. It adds up over all playthroughs and comes naturally on Run 1 if you shoot most enemies. Tip: Get it on Run 1, because Run 2 is the no-guns run for As Close as You Like.
Blunt Force Trauma trophy

Blunt Force Trauma

Details
Bronze β€” Kill 75 enemies with melee weapons. Get 75 kills with the plank, steel pipe or chainsaw. It adds up over all playthroughs. Tip: Your New Game+ no-guns run with the chainsaw covers almost all of it.
You Never Know... trophy

You Never Know...

Details
Bronze β€” Try to open locked doors 50 times. Try 50 locked doors (repeats of the same door count as you retry). It adds up over all playthroughs, and South Vale East alone has more than 50 locked shop and house doors. Tip: Try every door as you explore Run 1 and it pops on its own early on.
Shattered trophy

Shattered

Details
Bronze β€” Destroy 50 windows. Smash 50 windows (shop fronts, cars, the glass cases you break for loot) with a melee attack. It adds up over all playthroughs. Tip: South Vale East has well over 50, and smashing car windows for supplies does most of the work.
James of All Trades trophy

James of All Trades

Details
Silver β€” Kill at least one enemy with Wooden Plank, Steel Pipe, Handgun, Shotgun and Rifle in a single playthrough. Get at least one kill with each of the five standard weapons in one run: the Wooden Plank (the first enemy), the Handgun (Wood Side Apartments), the Steel Pipe (South Vale West, it replaces the plank), the Shotgun (Brookhaven Hospital) and the Rifle (Toluca Prison). Tip: Missable per run: once the pipe replaces the plank you can't go back, so make sure you've killed something with the plank before then. Missable.
Challenge Runs 4 trophies

Run conditions, best stacked into a New Game+ with the chainsaw. Full Challenge Runs guide →

I Saw That Town trophy

I Saw That Town

Details
Silver β€” Complete New Game Plus on any difficulty. After finishing once, start a new game with New Game+ switched on and finish it with any ending. Tip: NG+ is where the chainsaw, the Rebirth, Dog, UFO, Bliss and Stillness endings, and the Cryptic Letter memo are, so combine it with the speed and no-guns trophies.
Radio Silence trophy

Radio Silence

Details
Silver β€” Complete the game without using the radio. The radio turns itself on when you pick up the Wooden Plank in the first enemy scene. Straight away, open the inventory, select the radio and switch it off, then never turn it back on. Switching it off before the fight doesn't break the trophy. Tip: Turn on the visual radio indicator in Accessibility so you still get warned about nearby enemies. Missable.
Faster Than Fog trophy

Faster Than Fog

Details
Silver β€” Finish the game in under 10 hours. Finish a run in under 10 hours of in-game time. Cutscenes count; the pause menu stops the timer, but the inventory and map don't. Tip: Easiest in NG+: you know the route and can skip cutscenes. Focused NG+ runs take 4–6 hours. The old trick of going past 24 hours to reset the clock was fixed in patch 1.06. Missable.
As Close as You Like trophy

As Close as You Like

Details
Gold β€” Finish the game without killing enemies using ranged weapons. Finish a run with no kills from the handgun, shotgun or rifle. Shooting puzzle objects is fine. Tip: Do it in NG+ with the chainsaw from the ranch at the start. It one-shots normal enemies and handles the bosses in a few hits. Missable.
FAQ

Silent Hill 2 platinum β€” quick answers

How long does the Silent Hill 2 platinum take?
About 20–30 hours over two playthroughs: a thorough first run for the collectibles and the three standard endings, then a faster New Game+ for the special endings, the no-guns run and the sub-10-hour clear.
Is the Silent Hill 2 platinum hard?
No, it's about 3/10. There are no difficulty trophies (Light is fine). The challenge is planning around the 20 missables and the hidden ending behaviour.
How many endings are there?
Eight: Leave, Maria, In Water, Rebirth, Dog and UFO (all with trophies), plus the remake-only Bliss and Stillness. Rebirth, Dog, UFO, Bliss and Stillness are New Game+ only. See our endings guide.
Are there missable trophies?
Yes, 20. The collectible trophies (68 memos, 26 photos, 26 glimpses) are single-run and areas lock behind you, and several one-offs (Apartment 207 balloons, the pizza, 10 minutes on Toluca Lake, the bread, Room 106) have to be done at the right moment.
Do I need to play online?
No, it's a fully single-player, offline platinum.
