The Witcher 3 — Chronological Platinum Walkthrough

One Death March run from White Orchard to the post-game, in the order things actually happen. The plan. Death March from the first menu. Clear each Act I region properly (Keira in Velen; Triss, Roche, the masquerade and the Passiflora in Novigrad; Kingmaker in Skellige), recruit all seven allies before The Isle of Mists, join the Radovid plot in Act III, then clean up in free roam after the credits. Full tables are on the missables page, the gwent page and the contracts page.

Part 0

Before you start — difficulty, saves & habits

Ten minutes of reading that saves a second 100-hour run.

One playthrough gets the platinum. Every one of the 53 base-game trophies fits into a single Death March! run, and the game lets you free-roam after the ending for cleanup. The expansion trophies (Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine) are not part of the platinum.

Act III26–35Blindingly Obvious, Reason of State, the endgameAssassin of Kings, Kingmaker (before Battle Preparations)
Post-game32–35+Free-roam cleanupNone: counters, leftover contracts, level 35
Difficulty: pick Death March! at the very start. It gets you Walked the Path, Ran the Gauntlet and Passed the Trial in one go. The first 10 hours are the hardest. Stay on it all the way to the credits. Once the three difficulty trophies have popped, you can lower the difficulty for the post-game cleanup: contracts, counters and level 35 don't care what setting you're on. That's exactly how we did our own platinum.
Save discipline: keep at least three rotating manual saves and make a named save before each point of no return (marked ⛔ below), before every missable gwent game, before the Doppler chase and before the Woodland Spirit choice. The game autosaves often, but autosaves have overwritten more than one platinum run.
Habits for the whole run: read every book and note (Bookworm), touch every signpost (Globetrotter), buy every potion and bomb formula you see (Let's Cook!, Bombardier), buy every gwent card from every merchant and innkeeper, and grab every contract off every notice board.
Part 1

Prologue · Kaer Morhen & White Orchard

The tutorial, the griffin, and a five-minute Places of Power loop.

Main

Kaer Morhen (tutorial)

PrologueLvl 1
  1. A dream at Kaer Morhen teaches the basics: fast and strong attacks, dodging, the Signs and the crossbow.

Activity

White Orchard sweep (before you leave)

White Orchard5 Places of PowerContract
  1. Power Overwhelming: once you're free to roam, ride this loop so all five buffs are active at once (each lasts 30 minutes, and the loop takes under five): Aard (In the woods directly north of the cemetery, in a ring of large rocks), Igni (White Orchard cemetery yard, north of the Mill signpost), Axii (Across the bridge west of the Mill signpost, north-east of the sawmill), Quen (South of the Broken Bridge signpost, on the hill over the ravine (White Orchard has two Quen stones; either works)), Yrden (East of the Abandoned Village, just south of the road in the trees). The first use of each also gives a skill point.
  2. Contract: Devil by the Well (level 2): a noonwraith at the abandoned village south of the Border Post. Pin it with Yrden. It's your first contract for Geralt: The Professional.
  3. Gwent: buy the White Orchard innkeeper's cards and play every opponent in the area. The Zoltan Chivay card can be won here (there's a backup later).
  4. Side quests: A Frying Pan, Spick and Span, Missing in Action, On Death's Bed, Precious Cargo and Twisted Firestarter all fail when you leave, so clear them for the XP and gear.
  5. Read every note and book you find. Bookworm needs 30.
If you forget Power Overwhelming, White Orchard stays reachable from the world map later. It's still quickest to do it now.
Power Overwhelming trophyTrophy · Bronze
Power Overwhelming — Activate one Place of Power for each Sign (Aard, Axii, Igni, Quen, Yrden) so all five buffs are running at once. Each buff lasts 30 minutes. White Orchard has all five within a few minutes' ride.
Bookworm trophyTrophy · Bronze
Bookworm — Read (open from the inventory) 30 books, letters or notes.
⛔ POINT OF NO RETURN 1/6 — Imperial Audience

Returning to the Nilfgaardian camp and finishing the prologue triggers Imperial Audience in Vizima. White Orchard's side quests fail (Faithful Friend stays open). No trophies lock here.

  3. The trail takes you across Velen, and later to Tamara in Oxenfurt and Anna in the swamps of Crookback Bog. Family Counselor pops as this resolves.
  4. Progressing the Baron's story opens Crow's Perch's inner keep. Grab the ‘Fist Fights’ note from its board for Fists of Fury: Velen.
The Baron's follow-up in Crookback Bog, Return to Crookback Bog, fails at The Isle of Mists. Finish it when it appears.

Assassin of Kings — The Novigrad political chain, in this order: Redania's Most Wanted (Roche) → An Eye for an Eye → A Matter of Life and Death (the masquerade with Triss) → Now or Never (the mages at the docks) → A Deadly Plot (Dijkstra). All of these must be done before The Isle of Mists. In Act III, Blindingly Obvious: pick the first dialogue option every time you talk with Dijkstra and Philippa and agree to join the plot. Then Reason of State: help Roche carry out the ambush, and the trophy pops when Radovid falls.

Xenonaut trophyTrophy · Bronze

⛔ POINT OF NO RETURN 4/6 — Finishing King's Gambit

If you haven't finished Kingmaker yet, do Stranger in a Strange Land and The Cave of Dreams before completing King's Gambit.

⛔ POINT OF NO RETURN 5/6 — Battle Preparations

Act III's Battle Preparations in Skellige fails Possession, The Lord of Undvik, King's Gambit and Coronation, so Kingmaker must be done by now. It also closes the Crach and Madman Lugos gwent games.

Part 8

Endgame · On Thin Ice & Eredin

The last point of no return, the Eredin fight and the three difficulty trophies.

⛔ POINT OF NO RETURN 6/6 — On Thin Ice

The final battle

FinaleDeath MarchTrophies
  1. Stock up: your best oils, Swallow, Thunderbolt and plenty of food. Save.
  2. Defeat Eredin: keep Quen up, dodge his combos and punish him afterwards. The King is Dead.
  3. Finish the story. On Death March, Passed the Trial, Ran the Gauntlet and Walked the Path all pop at the end.
Ciri's fate (the ending) depends on choices across the whole game. None of the endings affect any trophy, so play it however you like.
The King is Dead trophyTrophy · Silver
The King is Dead — Story, finale. Beat Eredin, King of the Wild Hunt, in the last main quests. His frost attacks and summons are telegraphed: keep Quen up, dodge rather than roll, and punish him after each combo.
Passed the Trial trophyTrophy · Bronze
Passed the Trial — Finish the base-game main story. It stacks with the two difficulty trophies below.
Ran the Gauntlet trophyTrophy · Silver
Ran the Gauntlet — Finish the game on Blood and Broken Bones! or Death March!. It stacks with Walked the Path, so a Death March run gets you both.
Walked the Path trophyTrophy · Gold
Walked the Path — Finish the game on Death March!, the hardest setting. Start on it from the very first menu. The first ~10 hours are the hardest (low level, few potions). Once you have Quen, Swallow, oils and decent gear, it settles down.
Part 9

Post-game cleanup & platinum

Counters, leftover contracts and cards, and level 35.

The game drops you back into free roam after the credits. With Walked the Path in the bag, drop the difficulty to make the cleanup faster. Clean up:

Contract

Contracts & monsters

Post-game
  1. The two highest-level contracts are good post-game fights:

    ContractWhereLvlNotes
Contract: Missing BrotherInn at the Crossroads33—
Contract: The Creature from Oxenfurt ForestCamp east-south-east of the herbalist's hut35—
  2. Check your journal for any other contract still open. Geralt: The Professional needs them all (Devil by the Well excepted).
Geralt: The Professional trophyTrophy · Bronze · Missable
Geralt: The Professional — Complete the base-game witcher contracts (the quests titled ‘Contract:’, plus In the Heart of the Woods). There are about 30 across White Orchard, Velen/Novigrad and Skellige, picked up from notice boards and townsfolk. A patch removed the requirement for Devil by the Well, but the safe play is to finish every contract you can.
Gwent

Gwent cleanup

Post-game
  1. Buy any remaining cards from merchants and innkeepers in every region, and play any named players you skipped. Check the collection screen for gaps.
  2. Geralt and Friends: pass round 1, then win round 2 with only neutral cards (Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer are enough against a weak innkeeper).
  3. All In: play three heroes in one round and win the match. The same game can give you both.
Card Collector trophyTrophy · Bronze · Missable
Card Collector — Collect every base-game card: Northern Realms, Nilfgaard, Scoia'tael, Monsters, the neutral and special cards, and every leader. The Skellige deck and the expansion cards are not needed. Most cards come from buying from innkeepers and merchants and beating named players. A handful are one-shot: the masquerade cards, the four tournament cards at the Passiflora, and the cards from A Dangerous Game.
Geralt and Friends trophyTrophy · Bronze · Missable
Geralt and Friends — Win one round using only neutral cards (Geralt, Ciri, Yennefer, Triss, Vesemir, Zoltan, Dandelion, Avallac'h, Villentretenmerth) plus specials such as weather and Decoy. Easiest method: lose or pass round 1 cheaply, then play only your neutral heroes in round 2 against a weak opponent.
All In trophyTrophy · Bronze
All In — Play three hero cards (gold border) in the same round and go on to win the match.

Post-gameFarm spots
  1. Low-level wolves near Hanged Man's Tree (Velen): Butcher of Blaviken (5 kills in 10s), Can't Touch This! (5 kills, no damage, no Quen) and Triple Threat (sword + crossbow + Sign kills in one fight).
  2. Bandits at the Devil's Pit: Humpty Dumpty (Aard them off the ledge), Overkill (Devil's Puffball + a bleed + fire), Master Marksman (knock down, then crossbow headshots) and The Enemy of My Enemy (Axii the strongest).
  3. Drowner groups: That Is the Evilest Thing… (burn one, then Dragon's Dream) and Environmentally Unfriendly (gas pockets).
  4. Any lone human: Kaer Morhen Trained (10 counters in a row) and What Was That? (attack + counter + Sign + bomb in 4 seconds).
The Enemy of My Enemy trophyTrophy · Bronze
The Enemy of My Enemy — Cast Axii on a human so they fight for you, and let them land the killing blow on another enemy. Do it 20 times. The Axii skill that makes charmed targets fight for you (Delusion/Puppet line) makes it much easier.
Humpty Dumpty trophyTrophy · Bronze
Humpty Dumpty — Blast 10 enemies off a height with Aard so the fall kills them. Cliffs, bridges, towers and ships all work.
Environmentally Unfriendly trophyTrophy · Bronze
Environmentally Unfriendly — Get 50 kills from the environment: ignite swamp gas or other explosive gas with Igni, knock hornet nests or beehives onto enemies with Aard or the crossbow, or use explosive barrels.
Kaer Morhen Trained trophyTrophy · Bronze
Kaer Morhen Trained — Land 10 counterattacks in a row without taking a hit or doing a plain parry in between. A counter is a block pressed at the moment an enemy attacks.
Can't Touch This! trophyTrophy · Bronze
Can't Touch This! — Kill 5 enemies in one fight without taking damage and without Quen.
That Is the Evilest Thing… trophyTrophy · Bronze
That Is the Evilest Thing… — Set an enemy on fire (Igni), then throw a Dragon's Dream bomb next to them. The burning enemy ignites the gas cloud. Do it 10 times.
Butcher of Blaviken trophyTrophy · Silver
Butcher of Blaviken — Kill 5 enemies within 10 seconds.
Triple Threat trophyTrophy · Bronze
Triple Threat — In one fight, get one kill each with three different methods: for example a sword kill, a crossbow kill and an Igni kill.
Overkill trophyTrophy · Silver
Overkill — Get bleeding, poisoning and burning on one enemy at the same time, 10 times.
Master Marksman trophyTrophy · Bronze
Master Marksman — Get 50 crossbow headshot kills on humans and nonhumans (elves, dwarves). Monsters don't count.
What Was That? trophyTrophy · Bronze
What Was That? — Within 4 seconds: a sword attack, a counter, a Sign and a bomb, in any order.

  4. Globetrotter (100 signposts), Let's Cook! (12 potion formulae): check the counts and fill any gap.
