Redemption, and the definitive Black Flag

We asked if they'd ruin the best Assassin's Creed ever made. They didn't — they perfected it. Black Flag Resynced is the rare remake that honours everything great about the 2013 classic and then quietly improves almost all of it: the soul of Edward Kenway's pirate saga, rebuilt with the polish, performance and combat of a modern AC. It's the definitive version, full stop — and a comfortable 9/10.

Everything that made Black Flag special is intact: the open Caribbean, the thrill of captaining the Jackdaw, the naval shanties, the swing between assassin and swashbuckler. What's changed is the presentation. Rebuilt on a modern engine, it's genuinely gorgeous — 60fps, ray-traced seas, storms that toss your ship like a toy. Combat has been reworked to feel faster and more fluid with proper parries, the voices are re-recorded, and there's new content built around fan-favourites like Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet.

The catches

It's not quite flawless. The original's multiplayer is gone, and — more painfully — the excellent Freedom Cry DLC (Adéwalé's story) hasn't been carried over. And if you sailed the Caribbean recently, this is still the same voyage at heart. But those are footnotes against what's here: a sprawling, gorgeous, endlessly replayable pirate epic that has never looked or felt better. Reviewers are calling it "redemption for Ubisoft" — we'd go further and call it the best the series has ever been.

Whether it's your first time or your fifth, this is the definitive Black Flag — the best possible way to live out the greatest pirate fantasy in games. A near-perfect remake, and an easy 9/10.

The Verdict — Pros

  • The best pirate game ever, now gorgeous at 60fps
  • Reworked, faster combat with real parries
  • New Blackbeard & Stede Bonnet content
  • Re-recorded voices & modern QoL
  • A relaxed, missable-free platinum

The Verdict — Cons

  • No multiplayer
  • Freedom Cry DLC not included
  • Same adventure if you replayed it recently

Missable
An easy, relaxing platinum — just a long one. No difficulty trophies, nothing is missable, everything is offline, and the multiplayer trophies are gone. It's a 100% completion plat: finish the 12-sequence story, then clean up the Caribbean — every fort, underwater shipwreck, legendary ship, collectible and activity, plus a fully-upgraded Jackdaw. The time comes from the sheer size of the map, not the challenge.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

Step 1

Play the story (12 sequences)

Work through the campaign, unlocking the full map, the Jackdaw and Great Inagua. Completing Sequence 12, Memory 5 pops Ever A Splinter and ends the campaign. Grab collectibles and activities as you naturally pass them.

Step 2

Take the seas — forts, ships & the Jackdaw

Capture every Fort (King of the Castle), sink all Legendary Ships (Devil of the Caribbean), fully upgrade the Jackdaw (Ship This) and build up Kenway's Fleet (Collective Madness).

Step 3

100% the map — collectibles & Great Inagua

Sweep the Caribbean for treasure chests, underwater shipwrecks (Seven Deadly Seas), shanties, portraits, animals and more, restore Great Inagua (Governor · Dilettante), and hit Cartographer by visiting every location.

Step 4

Mop up the challenges → platinum

Knock out the fun combat & naval challenges (rope-dart hangs, pistol chains, perfect parries, tavern games) and any leftovers. The last trophy flips into Prizes, Plunder, and Adventure! — the platinum.
