The Review

A clay nightmare you won't forget

The Midnight Walk looks like nothing else. MoonHood (the team behind Lost in Random and Fe) sculpted every monster, tree and house in real clay, scanned it and animated it in stop motion, so the whole world has the slightly jerky, thumb-printed look of a Laika film you happen to be walking through. You play The Burnt One, woken at the end of the world, and the first thing you do is relight Potboy, a little pot with a flame for a head who becomes your lantern, your weapon and your only friend.

Light is everything. You strike matches to light candles that open paths, lend Potboy's flame to monsters you need to distract, and hide in wardrobes while things that want to eat that flame sniff around outside. The cleverest idea is closing your eyes: hold L1 and the world changes, eye-doors open and some monsters can only find you by sound. Five tales take you through swamps, a frozen mining town, a theatre and up a mountain, each with its own odd cast and a nasty creature at the centre.

It isn't hard, and the stealth sections can get repetitive by the third wardrobe in a row. But the art, the sound (play it with headphones in the dark) and the bittersweet ending make it one of the best-looking horror games of the last few years, and a perfect October game. For trophy hunters it's a short, relaxed platinum: everything is about the 76 collectibles, and chapter select means none of them can be missed for good.

Platinum Roadmap

The road to Burn Baby Burn!

A 2/10 platinum, about 6 hours with a guide. One playthrough plus chapter select, fully offline, nothing permanently missable.

1Play the story with our walkthrough. Pick up all 76 collectibles as you reach them and grab Mind Over Body (Chapter 2) and Face Your Fears (Chapter 4) on the way. Shadow Work comes naturally.
2Both endings. Choose Burn at the end for Burn Out, then Resume from the main menu and choose Stop for Fade Away.
3Clean-up. Check Housy's cupboards for any chapter with a gap and replay it from chapter select. Then Story β†’ Visit Housy and idle for 10 minutes for Home Is Where The Heart Is. Platinum.

All 16 trophies explained in depth

Burn Baby Burn! (platinum) trophy

Burn Baby Burn!

Details
Unlock the other 15 trophies. With chapter select nothing is missable, so one careful run with our walkthrough plus a few minutes of clean-up gets you there.
Story & Chapters 5 trophies

Unmissable: one per chapter for Chapters 1–4, plus relighting Potboy.

Fire Walk (bronze) trophy

Fire Walk

Details
Story, unmissable. Early in Chapter 1 you light the little pot creature (Potboy) with a match and he runs off. Pick up the glowing coal by the paper note and feed him two pieces: it pops when he takes the second.
The Tale Of The Burnt One (silver) trophy

The Tale Of The Burnt One

Details
Story, unmissable. Finish Chapter 1. Chapter 1 has 11 collectibles (4 figurines, 3 discs, 3 shellphones, 1 story page); grab them on the way so you never have to replay it.
The Tale Of The Loathsome Molgrim (gold) trophy

The Tale Of The Loathsome Molgrim

Details
Story, unmissable. Finish Chapter 2, the swamp chapter that ends with the Molgrim. It's the biggest shellphone chapter (9 of the 25), and it's also where you get Mind Over Body.
The Tale Of Coalhaven (gold) trophy

The Tale Of Coalhaven

Details
Story, unmissable. Finish Chapter 3 (the mines, the frozen village and the house on the hill). It has the most collectibles of any chapter: 21.
The Tale Of The Craftsman's Heart (gold) trophy

The Tale Of The Craftsman's Heart

Details
Story, unmissable. Finish Chapter 4 (the theatre, the sewers and the projectors). Get Face Your Fears in the sewers on the way.
Collectibles 4 trophies

76 items over six chapters. Chapter select keeps them all available, and Housy's cupboards show what you're missing per chapter.

Mad God (gold) trophy

Mad God

Details
Collect all 19 clay figurines. Each sits behind a round hatch you pull open: 4 in Chapter 1, 3 in Chapter 2, 5 in Chapter 3, 2 in Chapter 4, 3 in Chapter 5 and 2 in Chapter 6 (the last one, Potboy, is at the mountain top as the screen fades to white). Some sites say 18: two figurines share a number in their lists. The in-game counter is per chapter. Every one is in our collectibles guide.
Who's There? (gold) trophy

Who's There?

Details
Collect all 25 shellphones. Unlike the other collectibles they mostly sit in the open beside the path: 3 in Chapter 1, 9 in Chapter 2, 6 in Chapter 3, 3 in Chapter 4, 2 in Chapter 5 and 2 in Chapter 6. Listen to each one (it plays a short message) to make sure it counts. Locations: collectibles guide.
There Is Always Music In The Air (gold) trophy

There Is Always Music In The Air

Details
Collect all 17 gramophone discs, each behind a hatch: 3 / 3 / 5 / 2 / 4 across Chapters 1–5 (none in Chapter 6). The last one, Candle Valley, is next to the NPC in the tent in Chapter 5. You can play them on Housy's gramophone. List: collectibles guide.
Who Took The Sun Away? (gold) trophy

Who Took The Sun Away?

Details
Collect all 15 story pages (the Murkle's tale, watched as film reels in Housy): 1 / 4 / 5 / 3 / 2 across Chapters 1–5. The last is on some boxes beside the sandy path with the boats near the end of Chapter 5. List: collectibles guide.
Endings 2 trophies

Two endings from one final choice. Get both in a couple of minutes.

Burn Out (gold) trophy

Burn Out

Details
Reignite the sun: at the very end of the game (Chapter 6, top of the mountain) you're given two prompts. Press X for Burn. This is the first of the two endings; do it first.
Fade Away (gold) trophy

Fade Away

Details
Keep on walking the Midnight Walk: the other ending. After the Burn ending and its scene, pick Resume from the main menu, which drops you back at the final choice, and press Circle for Stop. You can also replay Chapter 6 from chapter select.
Miscellaneous 4 trophies

The two one-off moments (Chapter 2 and Chapter 4) and two passive trophies.

Mind Over Body (bronze) trophy

Mind Over Body

Details
Re-enact the Great Beheading, in Chapter 2. After you meet the Headmaster and get your firearm, take the building on the left of the Headmaster before going through the door behind her (shellphone 7 is in here too). Inside is a small room with a guillotine: stand there and wait until Potboy uses it.
Our clip: the building, the guillotine room and the trophy.
Face Your Fears (gold) trophy

Face Your Fears

Details
Matchstick it to the Grinner: shoot a Grinner in its face with the Matchlock. Grinners only appear in Chapter 4: the first one comes right after the flying machine and Shellphone 20. Load the Matchlock, wait for it to show its face and fire (dying afterwards is fine; the trophy sticks). The sewers after the first projector, by the matchbox, are another easy spot.
Home Is Where The Heart Is (bronze) trophy

Home Is Where The Heart Is

Details
Stay at home for 10 minutes. Home is Housy: from the main menu choose Story β†’ Visit Housy and just leave the controller for 10 minutes (or spend them looking at your collectibles). Do it at the end, when you're clearing up anyway.
Shadow Work (bronze) trophy

Shadow Work

Details
Rest in darkness for a minute: hold L1 to close your eyes for a total of 60 seconds. It doesn't have to be in one go, and the game makes you close your eyes so often (to sneak past monsters and move the eye-doors) that it usually pops on its own in Chapter 1 or 2.
FAQ

The Midnight Walk platinum: quick answers

How long does The Midnight Walk platinum take?
About 6 hours if you follow a collectible guide on your first run, plus a few minutes for the second ending and the 10-minute Housy idle. Blind, expect 8–10 hours with chapter-select clean-up.
Are there missable trophies?
No. Chapter select (through Housy) lets you replay any chapter, collectibles are tracked per chapter, and the two endings come from the same final choice.
How many collectibles are there?
76: 19 clay figurines, 25 shellphones, 17 gramophone discs and 15 story pages. Some lists say 18 figurines and 16 discs because they reuse two numbers.
How do you get both endings?
At the end choose Burn (X) for Burn Out. Then pick Resume on the main menu and choose Stop (Circle) for Fade Away.
Do you need PS VR2?
No. The whole game and every trophy work on a flat screen; VR is optional.
