WAR IN THE NORTH

Aspyr's Legacy Edition revives the 2011 co-op action-RPG set in the untold war across Middle-earth's north. Three heroes β€” Ranger, Loremaster and Dwarf β€” cut through Angmar's armies in a loot-driven hack-and-slash that shines brightest with friends.

Our Verdict

Fifteen years on, War in the North is exactly what it always was β€” a rough-edged, surprisingly gory Middle-earth dungeon-crawler that's a middling solo game and a genuinely good time in three-player co-op. The Legacy Edition doesn't reinvent it: you get a clean 60fps, sharper visuals, hot-swap co-op and quality-of-life tweaks (party health bars, better targeting), but the dated 2011 bones, stiff animation and thin story all show. As a $19.99 nostalgia hit β€” and a fresh, uncrowded platinum for Middle-earth fans β€” it's an easy recommendation for the right player; just bring friends.

Warrior of the North β€” Full Roadmap

A long, attention-heavy platinum. The difficulty trophies do not stack and each unlocks the next, so you're committed to three full playthroughs β€” Normal, then Heroic, then Legendary. Add the single-playthrough counters and 4 missable trophies (one of them famously buggy) and it demands a plan, though co-op takes a lot of the sting out.

Missable
πŸ”οΈ Two things will decide your run. First: difficulty trophies don't stack and each tier unlocks the next β€” you must play Normal β†’ Heroic β†’ Legendary, three full campaigns. Second: there are 4 missable trophies β€” The Lidless Eye (collect all 7 scrolls before Nordinbad; the quest is known to bug), Friend to the Ring-bearer (talk to Frodo on your first Rivendell visit), Friend of the Woodland Realm (find the caged elf in Mirkwood) and Eagle Savior (don't summon Beleram at the final boss). Keep manual saves, and see our Secrets & Treasure guide.

Step-by-Step Roadmap

Step 1

Playthrough 1 β€” Normal (and the 4 missables)

Difficulty trophies don't stack, so start on Normal (it's what unlocks Heroic). Use this relaxed run to secure the 4 missables: talk to Frodo the moment you first reach Rivendell, free the captured elf in Mirkwood, collect all 7 Lidless Eye scrolls before Nordinbad, and beat AgandaΓ»r without summoning Beleram.

Step 2

Sweep the single-playthrough counters

Several trophies must be done within one run: seeker (25 secrets), Expert Treasure-hunter (5 gilded chests), Many deeds (15 quests), Herb-master (15 potions), War-machinist (150 war-machine kills), Keen-eyed Marksman (50 headshots), Foe-hammer (200 kills), Bane of Mordor (600 kills) and Swift-winged Warrior (10 Beleram summons). Do them all on whichever run you're most comfortable in β€” see our Secrets & Treasure guide.

Step 3

Playthrough 2 β€” Heroic

Heroic only unlocks after you finish Normal. Co-op makes it much easier and nets the co-op trophies (Strength of Our Alliance, Where there's life, there's hope). Mop up combat feats along the way: Relentless, Living Shield, Battle-master and Warrior Exemplar.

Step 4

Playthrough 3 β€” Legendary

Beating Heroic unlocks Legendary for Against All Odds β€” the platinum's hardest trophy. Come in with your best gear so you can also land Like a Thunderbolt (3,000 ranged) and Fell-handed (1,500 melee). Co-op is strongly recommended.

Step 5

Cleanup β†’ Platinum

Tidy the totals: Champion of the North (level 20) and Dragon-hoard (hold 25,000 coins at once). When the last one pops, Warrior of the North is yours.

🀝 No one to play co-op with?

The whole platinum is far easier in co-op, and Strength of Our Alliance & Where there's life, there's hope require an online partner. Don't have friends on it? Post your PSN ID on our Co-op Partner Finder board and team up with another trophy hunter.

Warrior of the NorthPlatinumEarn every other trophy to claim the platinum. There's no DLC β€” it's the base 47. On top of that are the single-playthrough counters and 4 missable trophies, led by the notoriously buggy The Lidless Eye.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to platinum LOTR: War in the North?
Roughly 40–60 hours. The difficulty trophies don't stack and each tier unlocks the next, so you need three full playthroughs β€” Normal, then Heroic, then Legendary β€” plus cleanup. Co-op speeds the hard runs up considerably.
How hard is the War in the North platinum?
PIXELFORGE rates it about 6 / 10. Nothing is mechanically brutal, but three mandatory playthroughs, Legendary difficulty and four missable trophies (including the buggy Lidless Eye) add up. Playing in co-op makes the difficulty runs and challenge trophies far easier.
Are there missable trophies in War in the North?
Yes β€” 4 of them. The Lidless Eye (collect all 7 cult scrolls before progressing to Nordinbad β€” the quest is known to bug), Friend to the Ring-bearer (talk to Frodo on your first arrival in Rivendell), Friend of the Woodland Realm (explore Mirkwood to free the captured elf) and Eagle Savior (beat AgandaΓ»r without summoning Beleram). Keep manual saves throughout.
How many trophies does it have?
47 trophies (1 platinum, 1 gold, 13 silver, 32 bronze) worth 1,260 points. There's no DLC β€” the base list is the full platinum.
Do I need co-op / other players?
Officially only Strength of Our Alliance needs a 3-player session (some players report it working with AI companions, but a real party is the reliable route). Everything else is soloable β€” though co-op makes Heroic and Legendary far easier, so it's strongly recommended.
