Ubisoft has dropped a fresh trailer for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced this week — leading with a hauntingly reworked version of the sea shanty "Leave Her Johnny," reimagined by French artist Woodkid — and with launch now just weeks away, the full picture of one of 2026's most anticipated remakes has come into focus.
For the uninitiated: Resynced is a ground-up remake of 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, a game many fans still consider the high point of the entire series. Rather than a simple up-res, Ubisoft has rebuilt it on the latest version of its Anvil Engine, promising overhauled visuals and upgraded gameplay mechanics. It launches July 9, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with the PC version available through the Ubisoft Store, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Why all the excitement for this one specifically? Black Flag took the Assassin's Creed formula to the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean, handed players their own ship — the Jackdaw — and let them sail an open world of islands, naval battles and treasure hunts as charismatic pirate Edward Kenway. The seamless blend of ship combat, exploration and those now-iconic sea shanties made it a standout, and it's aged better than most of its peers.
The remake isn't just a fresh coat of paint, either. Ubisoft is adding roughly six hours of all-new gameplay, plus brand-new storylines built around real-life pirates Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet — the latter enjoying something of a pop-culture moment in recent years. There are also new sea shanties to collect, pets, a full photo mode and a host of quality-of-life improvements layered on top of the original adventure.
One notable change: Resynced is a single-player-only experience. The original Black Flag shipped with a multiplayer mode, but Ubisoft has dropped it entirely to focus on the campaign. For most players that's no great loss — Black Flag was always a single-player game at heart — but it's worth knowing going in if you have fond memories of the old multiplayer.
For the trophy and platinum hunters in the PIXELFORGE community, this is a big one. Assassin's Creed games are famous for their dense, collectible-heavy completion lists — and with six hours of new content, fresh storylines and presumably a reworked trophy list to match, the Black Flag platinum is shaping up to be a proper voyage. We'll have a full trophy roadmap and 100% guide ready when it launches on July 9.
