Double Exposure is at its best when it leans on what made Life is Strange special — a hook of a mystery, a cast worth caring about, and choices that genuinely gnaw at you. It's also, undeniably, a safer and more rushed entry than the series' peak.

Years on from the original, Max Caulfield is now an artist-in-residence at snowy Caledon University. When a close friend is murdered, Max discovers a new power — the ability to slip between two parallel timelines: one where the death happened, and one where it didn't. It's a smart hook that lets Deck Nine build a genuine whodunnit, gathering clues on one side of reality to change outcomes on the other.

The cast is the highlight. Caledon's students and staff are a diverse, likeable bunch, the facial animation is expressive, and the trademark ethical dilemmas still land — several choices had us sitting with the controller down. Fans who've missed Max's dry narration and photographer's eye will feel right at home.

Where it stumbles

The two-timeline mechanic is clever but underused, rarely evolving past its opening idea. The final act feels rushed, a couple of key characters are underwritten, and the moment-to-moment gameplay — walk, talk, examine, choose — brings nothing new to a formula the series has run for a decade. It's comfortable rather than bold, which is why critics landed it around the low-70s.
